2005 Lamadrid Estate Wines Malbec Matilde Single Vineyard 1933 Mendoza
($50) Saturated bright ruby. Wild, stony aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and leather. Juicy, sweet crushed berry and potpourri flavors show a penetrating quality and terrific vinosity and grip thanks to powerful acid backbone. Densely packed, uncompromising malbec, finishing with a lightly nutty quality, toothcoating tannins and intriguing floral and spicy nuances. Long on personality.

2005 Lamadrid Estate Wines Malbec Gran Reserva Mendoza
($25) Bright, full ruby-red. Sappy aromas of crushed black fruits, licorice, violet and mint. Juicy and quite tight, with a firm spine to its intense flavors of black fruits and pepper. Penetrating, minerally malbec with building tannins and noteworthy length. Serious juice, but in need of patience.
